How one Director of Nursing supports her staff and patients during the COVID-19 pandemic
As a Director of Nursing in Hayward, California, Jeannevy Belarde works tirelessly to address the needs of her staff while enforcing the policies and procedures of her facility.
In times of crisis, leaders like Jeannevy must also shoulder extra responsibilities to care for their patients. They work longer hours and make difficult decisions to ensure their facilities are adequately staffed at all times.
And yet, Jeannevy has not wavered in her commitment to the profession. She tries her best to comfort patients and staff. She’s also there to assure them of her care and support no matter the circumstance.

What made you choose your current career?
My passion to take care of patients and their families.
Walk us through a day in your life. What does it look like?
I always make sure policies and procedures of the facility are being followed. I also ensure that staffing needs are well addressed.
How has the pandemic affected your work?
During these stressful times, where everyone is anxious about what’s going to happen, it’s important to show my staff and patients that I am with them in this battle.
What has been the most challenging aspect of your job in recent weeks?
Staffing.
What aspects of your healthcare training have prepared you for the current crisis?
My passion to serve and protect my patients the best that I can.
What do you appreciate most about your job?
Taking care of my patients and making sure their needs are met.
Where do you find the inspiration to endure this difficult period? What’s been your greatest source of strength?
During this difficult time, my sources of strength are my family and my patients, whom I know need the most help.
Any words of advice or inspiration you’d like to share with other healthcare workers who may be coping with similar challenges?
Be strong for the patients, families, and staff, and show them you are with them in this battle.
What advice would you share with future generations of healthcare professionals?
Get all the knowledge and skills that you can from school. Become the best nurse you can be.
What other interesting things would you like to share about yourself?
I am a nurse who is not content with the knowledge and skills that I have. I also love to explore what nursing can be in different areas.
